Friends of Parkville Nature Sanctuary Amateur Photo Contest sponsored by the Backyard Bird Center, Whitehouse Flowers and Gifts, and the Parkville Wine House
Have you taken a picture of the Parkville Nature Sanctuary that you are proud of? We want to see it. Since 2018, the Friends of Parkville Nature Sanctuary has held a monthly photo contest for amateur photographers.
With three major sponsors—the Backyard Bird Center, White Farmhouse Flowers and Gifts, and the Parkville Wine House-- the contest illustrates the unique beauty of our nature sanctuary.
Here’s how it works: * Amateur photographers choose their best photo for each month, then email the jpeg file to us at [email protected]. Photographers who accept compensation for their work are considered professionals and are not eligible.
A panel of judges votes on the best image, and the winner has his or her photo framed and displayed at Parkville City Hall, the Backyard Bird Center, and the Parkville Wine House.
Winners also receive an honorary certificate and a gift card. The FOPNS board of directors votes on the best of the 12 monthly winning photos at the end of the year and determines the Photo of the Year.
CONTEST RULES
Photos must be taken in the Parkville Nature Sanctuary, or the waterfowl marshes or the Sullivan Nature Sanctuary in Platte Landing Park and capture the beauty of its landscapes, people enjoying the sanctuary, and its flora, fauna, or history. (Identifiable people must provide consent for photo use.)
Photo entries must represent images for the contest month.
All ages are eligible to submit photos; entry is free.
Contest is limited to amateur photographers. A professional is defined as anyone who makes more than $1,000 annually with his or her photography.
Entries are limited to one photo per person per month.
Entries should be jpeg format and at least 3 MB and emailed to: [email protected].
Avoid submitting huge files; it creates problems emailing images to judges.
In months with insufficient entries, judges reserve the right to not choose a winner.
Photographers are urged to edit their own images for exposure and/or cropping.
Images will be judged as they are submitted.
Whenever possible, submit photos in a horizontal format to accommodate for possible use in our calendar and in exhibits. However, vertical photos will still be accepted if the photographer decide its best in that format.
Name of photographer, address, telephone number, email address, date photo taken, location within Sanctuary, and caption of subject matter must accompany each entry. Entries must be emailed by 8 p.m. on the first day of the month for the contest the previous month.
Images may be used to promote the Parkville Nature Sanctuary and the City of Parkville. FOPNS reserves the right to crop photos to meet needs. Monthly winners will be notified by email early the following month.
